“Ciao”, not only is it the greeting that you will hear most from the mouths of Italians, “ciao” is possibly the best-known Italian word in the world. But what is the origin of this emblematic word?
“Ciao” is nothing other than the evolution of the Venetian “schiao”, a syncopated form of “schiavo”. Only from the 18th century onwards is there documentary evidence, first of the form "ciavo" and, successively, of the form "ciao". The original greeting “your slave”, as well as “your servant”, constituted an expression of respect, a symbolic way of putting oneself at the disposal of the other.
If you want to learn this and many other words and add mastery of Italian to your resume, you are in the right place. Welcome!
